Our 7 yr. old St. Bernard Kobe was seen on Oct. 1 by the local emergency vet for hot-spots. They gave him a 2 week prescription of Rimadyl (by Pfizer), or generic name Novox. He took the full prescription no problem and show good signs of recovery. Rimadyl was prescribed as a pain reliever.
On the weekend of October 18, we returned home to find him not walking at all, dragging his hind legs, not eating, heavy / deep breathing, more or less, appeared to be paralyzed. We had first thought he hurt his hips somehow over the weekend. I took him to the vet again on Oct. 20, telling our vet of his symptoms. They took a few Xrays & did some blood work. They said he most likely sprained his hip & will be fine. They loaded him up on Rimadyl again.
Wednesday, October 22, I returned home from work to find him dead in our back yard. Our family was devastated. He was a very healthy & VERY active 7 yr old dog. We dropped him off that night at a local Pet Crematory where we had his ashes put into an urn.
From that evening to present, my husband & I have done countless research on what happened to Kobe. After typing in the drug 'Rimadyl' into a search engine, we were astonished of the outcome. Thousands of people who've lost their pet the same way, the same symptoms, everything.
No remorse whatsoever from the vets on our situation. After more research, we found out the vets receive 'perks' or kickbacks from Pfizer for prescribing Rimadyl for everything from family vacations to lap top computers & mp3 players. We don't know what to do now. We never got the chance to get an autopsy performed, even though we requested that they wait before doing anything with the body until morning. His body was immediately put into a freezer before an autopsy could be preformed.
What do we do now? We know we are not the only ones going thru this now. We even called our breeder we bought Kobe from. They had one of their dogs (Missy) die with the EXACT same side effects as Kobe. Guess what? Their dog was prescribed Rimadyl approx. 3 weeks before Missy died.
Do a search online for anything with 'Rimadyl' in the heading, & you'll be amazed at what pops up. HELP!
