  2. LOL. Nice tags.

You know, one of the main reasons I chose BBPress was the Akismet integration...and then I forgot to turn the Akismet plugin on. D'oh!

Congrats for getting back on the air.

  4. Now if you can just get the front page posts to link to the forum like your old software used to do, we'd be golden.

I'm also glad to see you back on the air. Contact me privately if you are interested in porting the old design. I'd volunteer for that. (I could use the practice and the WordPress learningness.)

  5. Okay, other than the separation of Church and State that the new system offers, can I grump about one more thing? There's no link in the forum to the home page of the site!

Hopefully you can adapt or pay someone to adapt the forum more closely to the blog posts themselves and to the home page. (I miss the recent comments sidebar, too.)

    Nit pick!

Cool, you're back up and running. I like the new look. Hopefully many of the old regulars will be back.

  7. Thanks -- this took a lot longer than I ever anticipated. Should be new posts starting Monday.

I have added a plugin here so the topics and comments on the blog are mirrored here. Replies made to blog topics here will also be mirrored on the Wordpress site, so that functionality is back at least.

BBPress is still very much beta software with no date that I've seen on when they plan to hit 1.0. I'll probably wait until then to reimport the tens of thousands of messages from the old site, but they will return.

  8. Yay! Dude, you could get me to jump platforms yet at this pace.

  9. The platform issue is an interesting one. I'll always be disappointed that Conversant didn't take the world by storm. I checked out a lot of different CMS platforms in the last 18 months or so, many of which promised to make it easy for non-programmers to modify, etc. but Conversant's still the only system I've ever run across that actually delivers on that. Things I could do 5 minutes in Conversant on my own I have to go find a plugin and see if I can kludge it to do what I need.

For example, initially I tried importing my custom fields as WordPress categories...but the category system in Wordpress is totally fubar if you want more than a small # of them. Same thing with pages. Great if you want a very small # for an About page, etc., but start adding them right and left and the system breaks very quickly. It's clear that WordPress is developed with a very specific use in mind and once you step outside those parameters, it doesn't perform very well.

Once you get past those things, however, it's really come a long way in the past couple years and can do most everything Conversant could. I'm really having a lot of fun over at my personal site with it.

  10. Gah. I'm glad I stuck to Conversant for Unreason.(I was working on a redesign of that site before some things came up to take all my time.)

I still have a wordpress.com site from some earlier experimenting with it but I will take your word that the product is worth a second look.

    What I miss:
    1. Your old design. The people who made it clearly rocked.*
    2. A darn link to the home page from the forum!
    3. All the various metadata slicing the old site had.

I'm sure this is all achievable with time.

*Note: I made the old design so that is not a NPOV.

  11. Hey, Brian, can you e-mail me? I think there's a security problem for your site with my account.
