Smoking was once thought non-carcinogenic because smoking-related cancer is difficult to reproduce in lab animals. Many continued to smoke and to die from cancer.

Benzene was not withdrawn from use as an industrial chemical despite clinical and epidemiological evidence that exposure caused leukemia in humans, because manufacturer-supported tests failed to reproduce leukemia in mice.

Animal experiments on rats, hamsters, guinea pigs, mice, monkeys, and baboons revealed no link between glass fibers and cancer. Not until 1991, due to human studies, did the government label it carcinogenic.

Though arsenic was a known human carcinogen for decades, scientists still found little evidence in animals to support the conclusion as late as 1977. This was the accepted view until it was produced in lab animals.

Many continued to be exposed to asbestos and die because scientists could not reproduce the cancer in lab animals.

Pacemakers and heart valves were delayed in development because of physiological differences between animals they were designed on and humans.

Animal models of heart disease failed to show that a high cholesterol and high fat diet increases the risk of coronary artery disease. Instead of switching to a vegetarian or vegan diet to prevent the disease, people continued their lifestyles with a false sense of security. Patients received medications that were harmful and/or ineffective due to animal models of stroke.

Animal studies predicted that beta-blockers would not lower blood pressure. This withheld their development. Even animal experimenters admitted the failure of animal models of hypertension in this regard, but in the meantime, there were thousands more stroke victims.

Over half of the 198 new medications released between 1976 and 1985 were either withdrawn or relabeled secondary to severe unpredicted side effects. These side effects included complications like lethal dysrhythmias, heart attacks, kidney failure, seizures, respiratory arrest, liver failure, and stroke, among others.

Flosint, an arthritis medication, was tested on rats, monkeys and dogs; all tolerated the medication well. In humans, however, it caused deaths.

Zelmid, an antidepressant, was tested on rats and dogs without incident. It caused severe neurological problems in humans.

Nomifensine, another antidepressant, was linked to kidney and liver failure, anemia, and death in humans. Animal testing had given it a clean, side effect-free bill of health.

Clioquinol, an antidiarrheal, passed tests in rats, cats, dogs and rabbits. It was pulled off the shelves all over the world in 1982 after it was found to cause blindness and paralysis in humans.

Eraldin, a medication for heart disease, caused 23 deaths despite the fact that no harmful effects could be shown in animals. When introduced, scientists said it noted for the thoroughness of the toxicity studies on animals. It caused blindness and deaths in humans. Afterwards, scientists were unable to reproduce these results in animals.

Opren, an arthritis medication, killed 61 people. Over 3500 cases of severe reactions have been documented. Opren had been tested on monkeys and other animals without problems.

Zomax, another arthritis drug, killed 14 people and caused many more to suffer.

The dose of isoproterenol, a medication used to treat asthma, was worked out in animals. Unfortunately, it was much too toxic for humans. Thirty five hundred asthmatics died in Great Britain alone due to overdose. It is still difficult to reproduce these results in animals.

Methysergide, a medication used to treat headaches, led to retroperitoneal fibrosis, or severe scarring of the heart, kidneys, and blood vessels in the abdomen. Scientists have been unable to reproduce this in animals. Suprofen, an arthritis drug, was withdrawn from the market when patients suffered kidney toxicity. Prior to its release researchers had this to say about the animal tests: "...excellent safety profile. No ...cardiac, renal, or CNS [central nervous system] effects in any species."

Cylert (pemoline), a medication used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, caused liver failure in 13 children. Eleven either died or needed a liver transplant.

The diet drug combination of fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine was linked to heart valve abnormalities and taken off the market although animal studies "had never revealed heart abnormalities."

The diabetes medication troglitazone, better known as Rezulin, was tested on animals without significant problems, but caused liver damage in humans. The company admitted that at least one patient had died and another had to undergo a liver transplant as a result.

Despite the ineffectiveness of penicillin in his rabbits, Alexander Fleming used the antibiotic on a very sick patient since he had nothing else to try.

Luckily, Fleming's initial tests were not on guinea pigs or hamsters--it kills them. Howard Florey, the Nobel Prize winner credited with co-discovering and manufacturing penicillin, stated: "How fortunate we didn't have these animal tests in the 1940s, for penicillin would probably never been granted a license, and possibly the whole field of antibiotics might never have been realized."

The notoriously dangerous drugs thalidomide and DES were tested in animals and released. Tens of thousands suffered and died as a result. Animal experiments misinformed researchers about how rapidly HIV replicates. Based on this false information, patients did not receive prompt therapies and their lives were shortened.

Animal-based research delayed the development of the polio vaccine, according to Dr. Albert Sabin, its inventor. The first rabies and polio vaccines worked well on animals but crippled or killed the people who tried them. Researchers who work with animals have succumbed to illness and death due to exposure to diseases that though harmless to the animal host (such as Hepatitis-B), kill humans.

Time, funding, and resources devoted to animal experiments could have gone to human-based research. Clinical studies, in vitro research, autopsies, post-marketing drug surveillance, computer modeling, epidemiology, and genetic research pose no hazard to humans and provide accurate results. Importantly, animal experiments have exhausted resources that could have been dedicated to educating the public about health hazards and health maintenance, therein diminishing the incidence of diseases that require treatment. Vivisection is scientific fraud. Animal experimentation does not make sense. Human-based science prevents disease and creates valid therapies.

Hey Friends, I just released an anti-McDonalds music video, actually a playful, but lyrically relentless assault on the entire fast food industry. See it @
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m26kCl1TjPY
If you like it please help spread the boycott and the truth about their murderous business by embedding the video, sharing, rating, favoriting it etc.

There's also a "Supersized Version" (www.gaiaisi.org) That exposes the positive side of things, this is a short film where we go into my urban garden, talk about ecological-food issues, go into the kitchen to cook up a meal to give out at McDonalds after the video, and try and get people feeling better about eating well instead of feeling guilty about killing themselves.

Thanks for fighting the beast, peace

My dog called Chien has had to go into quarantine after already waiting 6 months in France previously and has all his paperwork in order.

The reason they would not let him in is because his initial rabies jab was completed the day before his microchip was fitted, now whilst DEFRA say this must be completed in this order, form reading the staturoy instrument regarding the importation of animals myself i don't think it states a specific order for vaccination and microchip.

therefore i'm desperately trying to get him out of quarantine.

its a horrific place, prisoners are treated better than animals in quarantine.

Legal ivory sales are back and currently taking place in four African countries!Locals are in favour of auctions as a means of revenue for conservation and community projects alike. The link below gives you a glimpse into what is going on in South Africa. I believe that auctions such as these not only legitimse poaching but may increase the demand for ivory. Who is tracking where the ivory comes from and what happens to it once it is bought? What does any one else think?

At a zoo in South East China, a horse is forced to carry a lion around an enclosure. The horse is kept in motion by a trainer with a whip; this horse has no choice but to perform. In order for the horse to perform these brutal acts it had to be subjected to torturous training, stripping it of all its natural instincts. Furthermore, the horse endures continual pain as the lion claws the horse's body to maintain its balance.

As the first stunt does not completely satisfy the crowds' lust for cruelty, a tiger now climbs onto the same horse's back to be carried around the enclosure, all this at the trainers command. The applauding spectators take pleasure in these terrifying and humiliating stunts and show no regard for these animals' welfare.

Not only is this horse subjected to this terrifying and unnatural performance, but the conditions in which it and other animals live are poor and inhumane, living in small cages in solitary confinement.

We fear that when this horse is no longer able to perform, she will be retired to a hungry pride of lions in yet another dreadful form of "entertainment" called live feeding. A cruel end to a beautiful and submissive animal.

Please do not allow this horse or any others to become another of China's victims and sign this petition. By doing so you will be giving the voiceless a voice.

Aviva on "[poll] Help! Wrongful vet prescriptions killed kitten."

Okay: Short story. Seven week old kitten, underweight with fleas/mites. Vet prescribed her with three different meds, two of those were for fleas. She gave half doses but, kitten was too young and weighed too little for some of the meds. She died a few hours after the vet appointment when we were driving to a 24 hour emergency vet clinic (after hours for local vets).

We are not certain if we can honestly do anything but, we'd at least like to maybe share our story with a local animal rights group. We're trying to locate one but, haven't found much info yet (this just happened on Friday). If anyone has advice to help us it would be much appreciated. Our kitten has died and we know it was unintentional on the vet's part but, we'd like to prevent this from happening to another kitten and it's human "parents". We only had her for one week but, we loved her and started bonding from the moment we met her at the animal shelter. Longer story with more details below.

-------------------------------
We adopted our kitten from a shelter when she was just six weeks old. Just a few days later she started showing symptoms of an upper respiratory infection, a fairly common diagnosis. We took her to the vet because we wanted our baby to be happy and healthy. Admittedly, she was underweight and had fleas/ear mites but, we were feeding her and she was too young/small for most treatments. Before the appointment, she had been fairly responsive and happy even with her yucky nose. The vet wanted to put her on an antibiotic for the URI and two different flea treatments. We specifically asked if the meds would be all right for our kitten since she was only seven weeks old and underweight. She blatantly lied and said that Advantage Multi was okay for our kitten, even specifically saying it was approved from week seven. They gave her half doses of all of the meds since she was underweight. After the vet, she was barely responsive but, we thought it was just because she was tired. She started having seizures about an hour after we left the vet. Banfield was already closed and the only place we found that had 24 hour emergency services was in Beech Grove (one hour, fifteen minute drive). An hour into the drive our kitten died in my boyfriend's arms. They did fax us paperwork after her death admitting that our kitten was younger and smaller than the drug manufacturer's recommendations for usage. They apologized and refunded our money for "good will" purposes but, that will not bring our baby girl back.

Our 7 yr. old St. Bernard Kobe was seen on Oct. 1 by the local emergency vet for hot-spots. They gave him a 2 week prescription of Rimadyl (by Pfizer), or generic name Novox. He took the full prescription no problem and show good signs of recovery. Rimadyl was prescribed as a pain reliever.
On the weekend of October 18, we returned home to find him not walking at all, dragging his hind legs, not eating, heavy / deep breathing, more or less, appeared to be paralyzed. We had first thought he hurt his hips somehow over the weekend. I took him to the vet again on Oct. 20, telling our vet of his symptoms. They took a few Xrays & did some blood work. They said he most likely sprained his hip & will be fine. They loaded him up on Rimadyl again.
Wednesday, October 22, I returned home from work to find him dead in our back yard. Our family was devastated. He was a very healthy & VERY active 7 yr old dog. We dropped him off that night at a local Pet Crematory where we had his ashes put into an urn.
From that evening to present, my husband & I have done countless research on what happened to Kobe. After typing in the drug 'Rimadyl' into a search engine, we were astonished of the outcome. Thousands of people who've lost their pet the same way, the same symptoms, everything.
No remorse whatsoever from the vets on our situation. After more research, we found out the vets receive 'perks' or kickbacks from Pfizer for prescribing Rimadyl for everything from family vacations to lap top computers & mp3 players. We don't know what to do now. We never got the chance to get an autopsy performed, even though we requested that they wait before doing anything with the body until morning. His body was immediately put into a freezer before an autopsy could be preformed.
What do we do now? We know we are not the only ones going thru this now. We even called our breeder we bought Kobe from. They had one of their dogs (Missy) die with the EXACT same side effects as Kobe. Guess what? Their dog was prescribed Rimadyl approx. 3 weeks before Missy died.
Do a search online for anything with 'Rimadyl' in the heading, & you'll be amazed at what pops up. HELP!

I saw Sarah Palin on the front of the new Newsweek magazine... She is standing there with a shot gun hanging over her shoulder... What a laugh!!! Like that is suppose to appeal to gun owners??? and to Evangelical Christians???

Do we really need a woman as VP who wants to put forth an image of "running with the boys", when she professes to be someone who doesn't run with the boys in Washington... She looks like a soccer-mom who is trying to be tough in a way that is so transparent. So what if she can shoot a moose or a beautiful caribou? that in itself is another subject... that does not qualify her for VP nor does it give her experience in handling the many problems that she would face if she were to become Pres. after McCain's death (if he were Pres.)...

This whole thing with Palin is going to be McCain's downfall (along with his own sad and false persona)...

Where are her own words as to what she will do for this country... she only seems to be able to speak the same words over and over, word for word from her acceptance speech which was written for her... why can't she speak on her own???

The real reason, and it will come out soon, she doesn't really like McCain and they are afraid she will say something against him or that she might say something that will backfire on him...

She needs to go back to Alaska, play Governor for a little longer and then retire to take care of the special needs child she chose to bring into this world, who will need a whole lot more care than her normal kids. How could she be so un-motherly as to parade that child (and all her children) around... like I said, she is still breast feeding and if you are a mother you know how demanding normal bables are with breast feeding... I am just appalled that there are so many people who are without intelligence and can't see how she was planted in hopes that women who voted for Hillary would come over to the McCain side... what do they think? People are that easily swayed??? Give me a break.

To whom this may concern,
I sent this to the Nevada Appel and to PETA.Dear Editor,

I am outraged that are government (USA) wood consider euthanizing wild horses. Are they causing any problems? How on earth could we be out off land for these beautiful animals. I don't understand how we as a country could even let this happen.
The Merriam Webster Dictionary, Eleventh Edition on the word euthanasia:the act or practice of killing or permitting the death of hopelessly sick or injured persons or animals with as little as possible for reasons of mercy. Ok then, are they sick or injured? If not, then who is? Thats right. You guest it. The Government.

Our inability to produce a chemical present in every other primate may be linked to a series of chronic diseases. Roger Highfield explains more.

What does it mean to be human? For most people, it all comes down to that extraordinary object between our ears, and how it blesses us with language, laughter and logic. But not for Ajit Varki, a doctor-cum-scientist who works in California.

For him, being human is also about a single chemical that separates us from our closest relatives, and which could be linked to many of our most debilitating illnesses.

The story began in 1984, when Prof Varki was working at the University of California, San Diego. When treating a woman with bone-marrow failure, he injected her with horse serum. The treatment carried the risk of a side effect called "serum sickness", in which the patient's immune system launches an attack on a molecule present in the serum called Neu5Gc.

Sure enough, her skin erupted with an itchy red rash. Investigating further, Prof Varki found that Neu5Gc was foreign to humans, even though we carry a very similar version of the same molecule - which may be one reason why animal-to-human organ and tissue transplants do not work well.

But in recent years, he has come to believe that the implications of this molecular difference are much wider. He has built up a range of evidence that potentially links Neu5Gc, a so-called sialic acid, to chronic disease.

Good morning!

I thought you might be interested to know about the big controversy that's ongoing about a feral cat colony behind a television station in Richmond, Virginia. The station manager tried to remove the colony, and the strategy backfired when three cats were killed. I'm not going to make accusations, but you can read the story here: http://www.wric.com/global/Story.asp?s=8553503. Animal cruelty charges are pending against the contractor accused of killing the cats.

The brand new Save Our Shelters Blog is providing daily site updates from the Trap, Neuter and Return effort that's ongoing behind WRLH-TV. Thus far, SOS has rescued 25 kittens and 6 cats from the site, and the number is growing almost daily. The trapping effort is expected to continue for several more weeks.

Thanks!

After reading a few threads, I wanted to introduce myself to this community. I look forward to sharing ideas with other forum members.

I have seen many times people selling turtle eggs in the flea market.I know that they are endangered and it is illegal. Still, nobody does anything. Since this is a third world country, things may take a little longer. Still, we have an obligation to the animals and to help preserve their way of life.

Best regards,

Richard
