PETA Ends Campaign Against McDonald’s
Several news outlets have reported on PETA’s announcement that it is ending its campaign against McDonald’s which was to have included handing out “Unhappy Meal” boxes to kids at the restaurants featuring dismembered animals and a Ronald McDonald-as-serial-killer splashed box.
McDonald’s recently made some vague announcement about getting its chicken and egg suppliers to look into changing their production methods, and it looks like PETA took the opportunity to declare victory and get themselves a little positive publicity to help offset the disaster they suffered over the Rudolph Giuliani “Got Prostate Cancer?” billboards.
An Associated Press story claims that as part of its ceasefire,
As part of the one-year moratorium, PETA will cease distribution of “Unhappy Meal” boxes that come with bloodied toy animals, the animal rights group said Wednesday.
My question is, did they ever really try to distribute “Unhappy Meals”? I certainly read enough blustering press releases from PETA claiming they would distribute them if McDonald’s didn’t cave in, but I haven’t read a single report of PETA activists actually going to a McDonald’s and handing out “Unhappy Meals.”
If anyone knows of a news account or personal experience seeing PETA distributing “Unhappy Meals” please e-mail me at brian@carnell.com, and if anyone can get their hands on an “Unhappy Meal” I’ll gladly pay a reasonable price to buy one.
