In early October, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals issued a press release asking people to send letters to the National Toxicology Program urging the program to stop conducting toxicology tests in animals.

The amusing thing, given PETA's typical stance that ordinary people (i.e. animal rights activists) should have more say over animal research, PETA in this case is upset that advice from non-experts is being solicited (emphasis added),

Each year, the National Toxicology Program (NTP) spends millions of dollars to poison animals in crude and outdated tests of chemical toxicity. What's worse is that the NTP actively encourages people to nominate chemicals they would like to see tested on animals. This has led to a veritable laundry list of ill-conceived NTP testing recommendations . . .

PETA -- same old hypocrisy, different day.
